This week I’m going to take a walk with you through what lenses I keep with me! I’ve been fully invested in taking my photography, and have been creating a career for myself out of it for a year or so now! Although I am just now taking action to make this full time, I have been at it with photography for 2 years! Within that time, I have shot a variety of session types including weddings, portraits, boudoir, etc.
I have one camera body, and it is the SONY A7ii! I was inspired when I was in Jersey getting photos taken by Chelsea Mealo, she had the A7iii at the time and I was blown away by it (as well as her work, total fan girl lol) When I first bought my camera, I didn’t know much about lenses! I’m outing myself now because one of the lenses that I own was purchased in a bundle with my camera and if I were to do it all over again I most likely wouldn’t spend the extra money on getting the lens and camera body bundle and I would put my money elsewhere! With that being said, the lens that came in the bundle is my FE 28-70mm 3.5-5.6 OSS. It isn’t a horribleeee lens, especially not just starting out… but if you want that crisp image with a smaller focal point then it doesn’t do you much good. I actually ended up using this lens for two weddings when starting out, the zoom aspect of it made it easy to navigate the shots I needed to get in a short amount of time. Now though, I would say it’s a good place holder in my case to help make sure all of my other lenses don’t move around. 😅
Another lens that I have had from the start is my FE 50mm 1.8. I love this lens to this day and think that it is super versatile with the type of sessions that I shoot. I could use my 50mm in practically any scenario. I love love love it! The fact that I can use it for solo portraits, couples’ portraits, boudoir, travel…makes it hard not to love. With that being said, this lens wouldn’t be the one I run to when it comes time to capture larger groups/ families!
In my more recent work, I have had the luxury of utilizing my two newest of lenses. 😍 The more I found myself getting into family photography I knew I needed to expand my lens game. I purchased two new lenses, one of them being my FE 28mm 2. I am super happy with this little guy, my 28 has made photographing families a breeze! It was such an affordable purchase when compared to the 35mm I was seeking out and I don’t think I would go back and make a different decision if I could! I really enjoy using my 28 and I would say that this lens is up there with my 50mm on being a go to, fav lens.
Now for the last lens in my kit! My FE 85mm 1.8, I never thought that I would enjoy using an 85mm… I always thought of them as a tight lens that wouldn’t be anything that I would rave over. With that being said, LET ME TELL YOU… this lens is literally the definition of the heart eye emoji. I first used it in a boudoir session to get detail shots… and wow did those shots capture detail. I was truly blown away at how the images turned out. So, thank you to Marcus my fellow friend that is also a photographer for convincing me to purchase this lens because now that I have it, I will not leave for a session without it. I am obsessed.
In conclusion, I totally love ¾ of my lenses lol. I would never say that this is THE kit that I want to have for life, but I do think it’s a great kit to start with and absolutely great to build off of. Not only because it allows for diversity in your frame sizes and perspective of capturing a moment, but also because it is an extremely affordable set of lenses. If you didn't walk away from this blog post with information you were hoping for.... well I hope you at least enjoyed my banter and these cute emojis I added to my Word Keyboard lol 💜
Have a beautiful weekend!
